(01) Brief
The hardest thing to own.
Setting up email on your own domain has barely changed in twenty years: a wall of DNS records, a registrar you half understand, and a first message that lands in spam. MailMonk set out to make custom-domain email as easy as pointing a domain at a hosting provider.
The brief covered the whole product: the onboarding, the brand, the pricing and the site that had to explain all of it in one scroll.
(02) Approach
Fifteen records down to three.
The product decision came first and the brand followed from it. The standard mail stack asks for around fifteen DNS records; we collapsed it to three, with verification running on its own, and let that single fact carry the positioning. The site is a five-step walk — bring your domain, add DNS, create mailboxes, send and receive, pricing — so the reader experiences the setup before signing up.
Visually, MailMonk is set in restraint: a monochrome palette, typographic hierarchy, and a series of vintage postage stamps as the only decoration, a quiet reminder of what email is. Two mailboxes stay free by design, because the people who most need an address of their own are usually the ones least able to expense one. A signed founder's note replaces the usual feature grid.
(03) Build
Most domains go live in minutes.
A Next.js application and marketing site on a shared design system, with authentication and flat annual billing (Hobby free, Pro $30/yr, Team $120/yr) wired to a live payments pipeline. DNS onboarding compresses the full record set through CNAME chains and verifies automatically; most domains go live in minutes.
Mailbox and alias management, a public status page, privacy and terms, and an OpenGraph layer so every shared link carries the brand.
